400 Series Stainless Steel Properties

With 11% more chromium and higher carbon content, 400 series stainless steel is a more durable form of the most common variety of stainless steel (300 series). Attributed to its lack of nickel content, 400 series stainless steel is more susceptible to corrosion, though by its nature as a steel alloy, it still retains corrosion-resistant properties.

However, slightly compromising the corrosion resistance gives 400 series stainless steel properties such as higher durability and wear resistance. Additionally, 400 series stainless steel has magnetic properties that are not present in other stainless steel varieties, making it ideal for certain industries and applications. 400 series stainless steel can also be heat treated for additional hardening.

Applications for 400 Series Stainless Steel Castings

When it comes to stainless steel, 400 series is ideal for a number of industries and applications that value its unique qualities. Due to its magnetism, ductility and hardening, 400 series stainless steel is used in high-temperature environments and high-usage applications such as:

  • Petrochemical Operations
  • Exhaust Systems
  • Heat Exchangers
  • Furnaces
  • Appliances
  • Food Equipment
